Being cooped in a bed that was too small for his long body, intravenous lines jutting out of his arms on both sides, and the constant fucking beeping was going to drive him to insanity before the war would. He felt sorry for the poor doctors, nurses, and other medical staff having to endure his behavior.

Ever since that dream, he'd been itching to leave the medical facility. Ever since that dream, he began to see her more and more. Ever since that dream, he was dreaming again.

He hadn't dreamt since he was a child.

And he certainly did not need to (want to?) see .

Montgomery's thigh, sliced by 's blade in Sootopolis, was bandaged, stapled together as his flesh began to heal thanks to the advanced technology and aid of Pokemon. His throat had a bandage slapped against it from the same blades that had pierced his thigh. Other cuts and bruises were left open to the air, less minor, yet requiring equal attention.

Fuck, his body was sore.

His pump began to beep. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. Montgomery sighed, shutting his eyes before he grabbed the remote and pressed his call light.

"Can someone turn this damn thing off-"

His door opened. It wasn't the nurse. It was...

Somewhere far away, his body slept. Gods, kings, and men alike doled punishment upon the Warrior’s body. A price was demanded, and a price is being paid. He will not wake, truly wake, for a month. What stands before Montgomery is a misty apparition, a phantom, a projection of he who slumbers in distant Avalon.[break]
“Glad you’re still in one piece, Montgomery.” He has seen so many hospitals this month. Who is he, to be so privileged? Who is he to live, to walk as if uninjured, when so many others must suffer? All he can do is visit, offer them comfort, offer up the promise that he will be there again next time.[break]
A nurse tries to tell him that visiting hours are over. He turns, and she recognizes him. There are few who don’t recognize the Warrior. She ceases her protests, but he gives her a promise anyway.[break]
“I won’t be long, Ma’am.” His word given, he steps inside, pulls out a chair, sits down. He smiles, despite everything. It is a sad smile, but hopeful. They both live, and in that fact is victory.[break]
“How long do you think they’re gonna keep you in here?”

[attr="class","monty"]Upon seeing the sheriff, an immense feeling of guilt consumed Montgomery. No longer did the annoying beeping bother him. In fact, he hardly registered that the nurse turned off the sound, primed a new bag of fluid, and left.

He tried to hide his shame. But Navy always seemed to see right through him.

"I dunno. Maybe a few more days to make sure everything's healin' alright. It's better than it was before," he replied, refusing to look at him.

Did he know that Montgomery had almost broken his promise? Did Navy see the blood thirst that had overcome him as drew her blades on him? And did he know about his encounter with ?

He couldn't help but panic at the idea.

"Glad to see yer okay." Physically.

It ages him, makes him feel more fifty than thirty. In those words is sincere gratitude to the world for sparing Montgomery. It would be a poor ending, had that story ended in Sootopolis. Better a triumph than a tragedy.[break][break]
“I admit it’s hard to keep up with everything. I…” He looks at his own hand in fascination. It is solid, but focusing on the limb makes it fade. If he thought hard enough, he would assume he meant the Rocket woman he'd fought.

"That Rocket lady? Nothin', as far as I know. I saw her come in to attack you, and I did what I was called to do. Luck wasn't on my side that battle," Montgomery answered, indicating to his wounded leg, the cut on his throat, and several other identifiable marks.

"You had more important things to handle than a Rocket grunt. You 'n ZACIAN."

Montgomery was tiptoeing around the fact he'd wanted to murder her as she taunted him. Even avoiding the fact that for a brief moment, maybe he had wanted her to end him.

Navy finds he does not wish to speak the words. If he believed it wasn’t too late for , why not for this flower, too?[break][break]

He sighed. "I don't know if I'm feelin' much like a 'good guy.'"

Though he had to hope himself, wondering if someone like could switch sides. Would she for him?

The thought made him nauseous. "I didn't plan on dyin' so easily, Sheriff. I may be new to WAR, but I can fight."

"Navy, before ya leave..." Montgomery trailed off, trying to think about how to phrase his question without revealing his true feelings toward her or exposing 's identity.

He couldn't afford for him to take her away.

"What do ya do when you've encountered the same person, the same criminal, and ya can't get the cuffs on their wrists? They escape every damn time. But ya don't think this person is a bad person? They just chose the wrong thing to do."

He sighed, pressing his head back into the pillow. "You know this person could be different. But do ya still bring them into justice?"

“The point of a prison’s to rehabilitate people, Montgomery.” A point lost somewhere along the way, one more checkmark on a laundry list of ways people get crushed under the heel of proper, ideal civilization. “Not to treat ‘em like they’re evil. Not to tell ‘em they’re damned for all time. You punish ‘em. You get their victims justice, but you want ‘em to be better.”[break][break]
Not much longer now. He’ll be gone soon – back to rest, back to Zaria, who slumbers in the Weald with him.[break][break]
“But you keep trying. You owe it to them. You owe it to the people they’ve wronged. The only justice in the world’s the justice mankind makes for itself.”[break][break]
